A SCAR (supplier corrective action request) usually arrives with two deadlines: a short one for containment and a longer one for the full corrective action. Many customers want the answer as an 8D. This page gives a practical checklist for each step, examples of weak and stronger answers from several sectors, and the points customer quality engineers often question. It applies to automotive, aerospace, medical devices, electronics, food, and general manufacturing. Your customer’s form, deadlines, and rules come first.
Why SCAR responses come back
A SCAR response is usually sent back for the same few reasons: containment without quantities, a root cause with no evidence, no explanation of why the defect escaped, or corrective actions that are really just containment. The customer then asks questions, and the clock keeps running. Checking these points before you send saves a round trip. See why customers reject 8D reports for more detail.
The SCAR 8D checklist
First 24 hours
- Read the SCAR: due dates for containment and for the full 8D, the customer’s form, and the part numbers and lots named.
- Confirm receipt and give the customer a contact name.
- Start containment: stock at your site, in transit, and at the customer. Record quantities.
D1–D3: team, problem, containment
- D1 names people from the functions involved, not only quality.
- D2 states what, where, when, and how many, in the customer’s words plus your own data.
- D3 lists each containment action with location, quantity checked, quantity rejected, and how good parts are marked.
D4: root cause
- At least one verified cause for why the defect was made (occurrence).
- At least one verified cause for why it was not caught before shipment (escape).
- Evidence for each: a test, a reproduction, data, or records. Not only a team opinion.
- No “operator error” as the final cause without asking why the process allowed it.
D5–D6: corrective action and verification
- A permanent action for the occurrence cause and one for the escape cause.
- Containment is not listed as the corrective action.
- D6 shows results from after the change, or an open item with a date.
D7–D8: prevention and closure
- D7 names similar parts, lines, or sites that were checked.
- Documents updated: control plan, FMEA, work instruction, or inspection plan, as relevant.
- D6 or D8 states when containment ends and on what evidence.

Weak vs stronger SCAR answers: examples from five sectors
The examples below are illustrative and fictional, not from real cases.
Automotive, plastic moulding (illustrative)
Weak answer: “Short shots found. Machine reset. Closed.”
Stronger answer shows: Sort of stock and transit with quantities, a cause tied to a process parameter with trial data, an escape cause for why the visual check missed it, and lot results after the change.
Aerospace, sheet metal (illustrative)
Weak answer: “Burr on edge. Deburr step re-trained.”
Stronger answer shows: Which serial numbers were affected, why the deburr step could be skipped, the change to the routing, and inspection records from the next batches.
Medical devices, packaging (illustrative)
Weak answer: “Pouch seal open. Sealer checked, OK.”
Stronger answer shows: Held lots listed, the seal test that reproduced the failure, the parameter window now locked, and seal test results after the change.
Electronics, cable assembly (illustrative)
Weak answer: “Wrong pin position. Operator error.”
Stronger answer shows: Why the crimp tool and drawing allowed a wrong pin, why the electrical test did not catch it, and the added test step with results.
Food, labelling (illustrative)
Weak answer: “Wrong label applied. Line cleared.”
Stronger answer shows: Affected batches traced and held, why the label changeover check failed, the new verification step, and its records.

Deadlines and interim answers
If the full investigation will take longer than the SCAR allows, send what you have on time: containment results, the investigation plan, and a date for the root cause. Mark open items as open, with an owner and a date. An honest interim answer usually goes down better than a complete-looking report with weak evidence.
SCAR, CAPA, and 8D
The SCAR is the customer’s request. The 8D is your answer. Your internal CAPA record tracks the same case in your own system. Link them by number so an auditor can follow one to the other. See CAPA vs 8D for how they fit together.
If the customer sends it back
- Read each question and answer it in the report, not only in the email.
- Add the missing evidence rather than rewording the same claim.
- Keep a revision note so the customer can see what changed.

FAQ
- What is a SCAR?
- A supplier corrective action request is a formal request from a customer to investigate a problem with your product or delivery and send back a corrective action. Many customers ask for the answer in 8D format.
- Can we answer a SCAR on our own form?
- Use the customer’s form or portal if they specify one. You can attach your internal records, but the main answer should follow their structure.
- What does 8D Gate do with a SCAR response?
- It reviews the 8D report text as a pre-send readiness check. You get an Accept / Conditional / Reject advisory with missing evidence and questions. It isn’t a customer decision. The review tool is v0.1: it reviews English 8D reports, and the interface and report are in English. Templates are also available in German, Czech and Polish.
Free pre-send readiness check
Before the SCAR response goes out, run the text through the free supplier 8D readiness check.
Paste text or upload PDF, DOCX, or Excel. You get an Accept / Conditional / Reject advisory, a score, section ratings, missing evidence, and questions to close gaps, with a PDF download. It is a pre-send readiness check for your team, not a customer decision.
