PPM from counts, not from capability

Here PPM means parts sent back per million delivered parts: sent back divided by delivered, times one million, rounded. It comes from your goods receipt and complaint numbers. The PPM vs Cpk page is about something else: the PPM you would expect from a process capability value.

What is in the file

  • Settings: your own PPM flag limit. None is preset; leave it blank and nothing is flagged.
  • Log: supplier, part, a date in the month, delivered, sent back. Sent back cannot be more than delivered.
  • A month with nothing delivered shows "No deliveries" instead of a division error. A row with parts sent back but delivered left blank shows "Enter delivered parts" and stays out of the totals until you fill it.
  • Summary: per supplier the months logged, totals, PPM over all months and the months above your limit. The summary adds all parts of a supplier together.
  • Counts under the summary. No score and no ranking.

Example (fictional)

Made-up suppliers, extract; the limit of 500 is set for the example only, not a suggestion:

SupplierMonthDeliveredSent backPPMFlag
Supplier AAug 20261800012667Above your limit: worth a check
Supplier BAug 202600No deliveries
Supplier BSep 202640001250
Supplier CAug 202680022500Above your limit: worth a check

Supplier C shows how small deliveries swing PPM: two parts sent back in a small lot give a high number. Worth a check before acting on one month.

Worth a check each month

  • Red rows: months above your limit. Look at the parts and the reason before writing to the supplier.
  • The same supplier above the limit in several months: worth a corrective action request, for example with the SCAR template.
  • Sent-back counts that only come from one source, such as goods receipt: parts sent back from the line may be missing.

Your customers and your own procedure decide which limits apply. The flag is an aid, not a verdict on the supplier.
